The city of Great Falls was not named after one "great fall" but after several spectacular falls that are located on the Missouri river near the city. In fact, these great falls cost the Lewis and Clark Expedition an extra month of precious time and energy to portage around. Today the city is the third largest in Montana and is the site of the Malmstrom Air Force Base - the center of our nation's first Minuteman Missile Complex. The museum explains the history of the base, from its role in World War II to the present. Displays at the air park include a "Huey" helicopter, a Stratotanker used for in-flight refueling, a Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic missile and many aircraft used as fighters and bombers.
In addition to its waterfalls and the air force base, the city is also known to be "electric" due to the presence of multiple dams and power plants and is also hometown to famed cowboy artist Charlie Russell, his original home and log studio are now part of the C. M. Russell Museum complex.
